28 April 2026 – Late April half-day tour

After picking up Antonia, we first headed to the Salina Nature Reserve managed by BirdLife Malta, since she was keen to see some European waders. Although there were not large numbers of waders around, we managed to see 2 Curlew Sandpipers, around 5 Wood Sandpipers, a single Temminck’s Stint, and multiple Common Sandpipers. Gulls were represented by the resident Yellow-legged Gulls accompanied by several lingering Mediterranean and Black-headed Gulls, joined by at least 3 Slender-billed and 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull. We then proceeded to the Ghadira Nature Reserve, also managed by BirdLife Malta, to see more waders. Here we saw 3 Black-winged Stilts, a Greenshank, 3 Ruffs, 2 Little Stints, 3 more Curlew Sandpipers, and several Little Ringed Plovers including chicks and an incubating bird. A Greater Flamingo was also present in the reserve. Good numbers of passerines were also around, including Wood Warblers, Pied Flycatchers, Icterine Warblers, and Sedge Warblers.

We then headed for a short walk at a coastal garrigue area. Here we saw multiple Whinchats and breeding Greater Short-toed Larks, alongside 2 Northern Wheatears, another Icterine Warbler, 2 Tawny Pipits, a Common Redstart, 2 Western Yellow Wagtails, and a Woodchat Shrike. En route to our next location, we spotted another Woodchat Shrike and 2 Turtle Doves. We then headed to Malta’s largest wooded area, where several Pied Flycatchers were around, together with some more Icterine Warblers, a few Garden Warblers and another Common Redstart. Eventually we found our main target in the form of at least 3 Golden Orioles, before finally calling it a morning.
